2020 Class List & Fees

Exciting news! We’ve decided that all our herd work classes will include three fresh cows instead of two. We feel this is a great way to step up the quality of our shows. We had a few questions about this after the last show:

If we’re paying for extra cattle, why were there not enough fresh cows for every cutter in the herds at the August show?

We had a lot of late entries! We order cattle immediately after entries are due, so when you enter late to a herd work class we’re not able to add cattle to the herd. This means that the late entries cut used cattle, which is why they are drawn at the end of the herd. Every on-time entry had three fresh cows! Please make sure to get your entries in by the due date to avoid cutting used cattle.

What’s the point of having three fresh cows? I was fine with two!

As Gem State grows, we’re doing our best to improve the quality of our shows. Fresh cattle generally work better than used ones. With our previous system of only two fresh cows per cutter, that meant that each rider had to cut a used cow for their third cow–or more likely, earlier draws cut three fresh cows and later ones cut three used ones. Providing three cows per cutter is standard at larger, sanctioned shows and we believe providing the same experience at our club shows gives a more valuable experience for both horse and rider.

Scholarship Opportunity

Gem State gives away a $500-$1000 scholarship at our year-end banquet. As in years past, scholarship eligibility will be determined by the quality of the written application (available in October).

Students must also volunteer at at least two of our four shows. The amount of time they spend is up to them. Their performance will be assessed by the board and taken into account when determining the winner. Our hope is that adding a performance-based requirement will reward students for hard work and real-world experience.

Gem State is a non-profit, so this volunteer work may help fulfill community service/volunteer requirements for school or other scholarships.
